Red Twig Studio is a great place to focus and create new work. It is located just south of Olympia, Washington where we are surrounded by forests, large open fields and wetlands. The wetlands are filled with frogs, bear and occasionally elk. My studio is set up for the process of screen printing. However, beginning in 2014, I started taking trips to draw with pastels directly from the landscape. I have found favorite places and return to the same sites frequently. At first the images were slow to come, but eventually I began to feel more comfortable with new work. I look for places where the land can be viewed up close and with a long distance view. I know that when I am drawing I am connecting with myself and the landscape at a deep level, so the work has emotional content for me. The new open air landscape painting gives me the chance to go visit great places and spend time there. My most recent pieces are exploring new ways of working with pan pastels, by embedding the pastel into paper board and using very fine layers to create subtle color and light areas.
